Spain's second most famous beer brand is Mahou, founded in 1890 in Madrid. After several years of developments, the French company Danone takes over 33% of the Spanish brewery in 1970, and in 2000 Mahou buys Danone's share in the San Miguel brewery, creating the Grupo Mahou-San Miguel, the largest brewery in Spain. In 2005, Danone completely withdraws from the beer world, and Mahou-San Miguel continues independently.
