Nutella was discovered by chance and a stroke of genius: due to the shortage of cocoa beans after the Second World War, pastry chef Pietro Ferrero created a delicious sweet in 1946 by combining hazelnuts with milk, sugar, and a small pinch of cocoa. He named his creation ‘Giandujot’. Within a few years, the Giandujot was transformed into a spreadable paste. This delicious paste quickly became known outside Italy as well, and it was decided to change the name to ‘Nut’ (because of the hazelnuts), followed by the suffix ‘-ella’.
