Today, Beaulieu Vineyard is known as one of the most historic wineries with grand cru status in Napa Valley. According to legend, Fernande de Latour exclaimed, "quel beau lieu!" ("what a beautiful place") when her husband Georges first brought her to their land in Rutherford, California. This marks the birth of Beaulieu Vineyard.
De Latour became known for importing phylloxera-resistant rootstocks from Europe to help rebuild the recently devastated young Californian wine industry. During Prohibition, when most wineries had to close, Beaulieu Vineyard actually increased its activities by selling sacramental wine to the Catholic Church. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, De Latour dedicated himself fully to research and innovation to bring out the best expression of the Rutherford Estate in the form of wine; he called this the Private Reserve.
