The butternut squash is a vase-like fruit with a long neck and a round base. The fairly soft skin of the squash is beige to yellow in color and easy to remove. Butternut squash contains an orange, fleshy pulp and has a sweet nutty flavor. As the fruit ripens, the color becomes deep orange and the flavor fuller and sweeter.
