The red onion is a sibling of the regular onion. It belongs to the genus Allium, which is better known as the onion family. Red onion has a deep red, almost purple, skin. It has a distinct spicy flavor and is therefore a popular seasoning. Think of salads, such as the Niçoise salad or a goat cheese salad.
