The Skrei is a winter cod. This fish is therefore only available for a short period, from January to March. The name Skrei comes from the Norwegian word 'skreid', which means wanderer. This refers to the long journey this fish makes every year. The adult winter cod travels great distances from the Arctic Circle to the Lofoten in Norway to spawn. It is the only place in the world where the Skrei spawns and also the only location where this cod can be caught. Due to spawning, the catch is subject to very strict regulations to maintain the fish population. Skrei has firm and flavorful flesh and can be prepared in many ways.
