The pinto bean owes its name to its appearance. In Spanish, the bean is called Frijol Pinto, which literally means "speckled bean". The bean is also known as the Lapwing bean, because the bean resembles the egg of the lapwing in appearance. Pinto beans have a slightly sweet taste. Soak the beans for 2 hours and then cook them for about 45 minutes.
