Beerenburg owes its name to the Amsterdam herbalist Hendrik Beerenburg. He started a wholesale business in herbs in 1645, where he also packaged the herbs in small packets. Sailors would steep these packets in gin or brandy. The herbal bitter that thus emerged was named 'Beerenburg' and was attributed medicinal properties. Over the centuries, the most successful Beerenburgers were made in Friesland, and that is still the case today. Each Beerenburger has its own recipe and method of preparation, so Beerenburgers can vary in taste from very bitter to soft and sweet.
This Beerenburger from Boomsma is still prepared according to the traditional recipe. It is a pure natural product and is made without artificial colorings, fragrances, and flavorings. The result is a Beerenburger with a full taste and powerful aroma.
