The liqueur that originated over 100 years ago in the café of the Nobel family has been called Nobeltje for as long as anyone can remember. Nobeltje is a sweet and strong liqueur based on old Dutch rum and has notes of vanilla and orange. Traditionally, Nobeltje is drunk alongside a cup of coffee, through hot chocolate, or with ice as an aperitif or digestif. Nowadays, Nobeltje increasingly plays the leading role in a refreshing long drink with Ginger Beer and lime. Nobeltje originated in the harsh winter of 1902. The island became isolated due to bad winter weather, and supplies from the mainland were no longer possible. Thus, great-grandfather Willem Barend Nobel was forced to be creative with the leftover drinks in his café in Ballum. The mixture that was created then is still the basis of the secret family recipe that has been passed down from father to son for four generations.
