The wine region Bierzo is located in the northwest of Spain, near the eastern border of Galicia. The region is currently considered, like for example Rueda, Jumilla, and Toro, as a promising 'new' wine area. The strong point of Bierzo is the red mencía grape. More than two-thirds of the vineyards are planted with this variety, which is somewhat comparable to the cabernet franc from the French Loire. However, Bierzo has more sun and therefore the mencía can easily reach full ripeness here.
