Almabtrieb is a mild red smear cheese from Stainach in the Austrian region of Styria. The cheese derives its name from the traditional Almabtrieb, the annual event in early autumn when the mountain cows, decorated, are brought back to the barn to mark the end of the summer grazing period in the Alpine meadows. The cheese has a mild red smear and a soft, accessible flavor that is characteristic of this type of cheese.
