Chapoutier De L’Orée 2017 is a refined white wine made from 100% Marsanne grapes sourced from the eastern “Les Murets” plot on the Hermitage hill. The soil consists of ancient glacial deposits rich in red clay. The grapes are hand-harvested in several passes, followed by gentle settling and whole-cluster pressing, with moderate use of sulfur. Fermentation takes place mainly in wooden barrels (10% new) and partly in stainless steel tanks. The wine matures for 11 months on fine lees, with occasional bâtonnage. It has a pale golden color and a nose reminiscent of popcorn, flint, yellow fruit, and fennel. On the palate, it is full and smooth, with fresh acidity, toasted notes, and a saline, juicy finish. The wine received high praise: 99 points from Decanter, 98 from Jeb Dunnuck, 96 from Robert Parker, and 95 from both Vinous and James Suckling. The 2017 vintage is considered exceptional with excellent aging potential; despite extreme weather conditions, the harvest produced elegance, balance, and tension, with soft tannins in the red wines and remarkable freshness and minerality in the white wines.
