L’Ermite Blanc 2017 is without doubt the rarest and most iconic white wine from Maison M. CHAPOUTIER, made from 100% Marsanne, sourced from the highest point of the Hermitage hill near the chapel in the lieu-dit “L’Ermite”. The vineyard is situated on an east-facing terrace with extremely poor granite and loess soils. The grapes are hand-harvested in several passes, then whole bunch pressed, with moderate use of sulfur and fermentation on indigenous yeasts, mainly in demi-muids (25% new oak) and partly in stainless steel. The wine matures for 12 months on fine lees. In the glass, it shows a pale gold color with brilliant reflections. The nose is reductive with mineral flint aromas, notes of boxwood, toasted sesame, white flowers, and fresh butter. The palate is fresh and saline, with fine toast, noble bitterness, and lemon zest on the finish, alongside hawthorn and a hint of browned butter. A wine of great length, vibrant acidity, and significant aging potential. The 2017 vintage, despite extreme weather conditions, produced very elegant, perfectly balanced wines. The white wines, including this exceptional cuvée, retain impressive freshness and minerality. Awarded 100 points by Robert Parker and 98 points by Decanter, Wine Spectator, and Jeb Dunnuck.
