Unico undergoes an extraordinary maturation process: more than ten years in oak and in the bottle. In its undisturbed rest, this inimitable wine develops a timeless aging potential. As the name suggests, this unique wine is a tribute to the Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards of the Vega Sicilia estate.
The 2015 vintage matured quickly, evenly, and exceptionally well. It was essential to harvest the grapes al dente, when they were crisp, fresh, and juicy, to avoid overripeness. This vintage was special for Gonzalo Iturriaga. "It was my first vintage at Vega Sicilia," the winemaker explains. "I realized there is something authentic about the Vega Sicilia estate, because when I taste the grapes, I feel the concentration, the power, but also the elegance and silkiness. That is the foundation of a great wine. When you taste that concentration, you understand the necessity of the unique maturation we apply at Vega Sicilia: five years of aging in oak, with an initial phase of about one and a half years in barrels to shape the wine, and a second phase of about three and a half years in oak casks to give the wine an entirely new dimension."
Tasting notes: Complex nose with concentrated dark fruit, subtle oak, and spice. The palate is powerful yet elegant, with silky tannins and refined structure. Long, persistent finish.
